Montessori is a method of teaching designed by Dr. Maria Montessori during her years of research devoted solely to observing small children learn.  In the course of this research, Dr. Montessori found that children have multiple intelligences for learning and are not simply “textbook learners.”

As a result the Montessori program is focused on nurturing the child at his or her own stage of development rather than conforming the child to a prescribed group curriculum. Children are given the opportunity to act independently and choose their own tasks. A day in the Montessori classroom is fluid, blending group presentations with one-on-one instruction.  As each child works through carefully prepared activities, a Montessori Teacher observes and guides in order to introduce more advanced concepts as soon as the child is ready. To support this advanced methodology, Dr. Montessori created unique learning materials specifically designed to enhance learning and development. Watching a Montessori classroom in “action” with these materials in use is the best way to appreciate the unique approach at work.
